Blacking kits - Liquid
METALBLAK – user instructions for liquid kits
Room temperature blacking for iron, steel and cast iron, zinc and brass.
Our liquid kits contain all of the chemicals you need to complete the blacking process - Degreaser, Conditioner, Blacking liquid (Metalblak, Brassblak or Zincblak) and Oil Sealer.
All of our chemicals are supplied in concentrate form.
Containers used for our blacking process need to be of a non-corroding material,
polyethylene or stainless steel.
Process
Please wear gloves and keep solutions out of reach of children.
Ensure the components to be treated are free from rust/scale. METALBLAK Rust Remover
can be used for the removal of rust/scale (can be bought separately)
Dilute with clean mains water, as follows:
Stage one Degreaser - 1 part water to 1 part product
Stage two Conditioner - 9 parts water to 1 part product
Stage three Metalblak - 3 parts water to 1 part product
Brassblak - 4 parts water to 1 part product
Zincblak - 4 parts water to 1 part product
Stage four Oil sealer - use as supplied
For best results the process temperature should be maintained at 18C.
Stage one - Degreasing
Fully immerse the component in the degreaser for 10 minutes
Agitate occasionally
Please note : highly polished surfaces and certain finishes may require the Degreaser to be used at 70C
Rinse in flowing water for 30seconds - 1 minute
Stage two – Conditioner
Fully immerse the component in the conditioner for 30 seconds to 1 minute
Agitate occasionally
Rinse in flowing water for 30 seconds - 1 minute
Stage three - Blacking Solution
Fully immerse the component in the Blacking Solution for 30 seconds to 2 minutes
Agitate occasionally
When black remove component from solution. You will not increase the depth of Black by extending theimmersion times.
With Brassblak - it may be necessary to remove surface powder from the components
by cloth. This will result in a pewter black finish.
Rinse in flowing water for 30 seconds - 1 minute
Remove excess water with a cloth or compressed air.
Stage four – Oil Sealer
Fully immerse the component in the Oil Sealer for 10 minutes
Agitate occasionally
Drain and dry for 45 minutes +

Please note: to maintain maximum corrosion protection do not remove the oil from the component.
Antique Effect
To achieve an aged effect with Zinc, brass and copper - relieve the components to allow the base metal to show through and seal with a lacquer to maintain finish.
